Doctor Who Treasure Trove!

10 Doctors
So upstairs I have a guest bedroom that has an antique chest in it that hasn't been opened for at least 15 years. I had this vague idea that it contained my father's WWII medals, a few old quilts and maybe some old paperwork - including a dozen Doctor Who magazines from the 80s. I finally opened it and had massively underestimated the Doctor Who collection! I found:
- 69 Doctor Who magazines
- 21 DW Classic Comics
- 4 DW In-Vision magazines
- 3 Target DW novels
- a Macon Opus Con I program signed by Jon Pertwee (I vaguely remember that)

The magazines have some wonderful pictures that I have not seen floating around the net. I'll try to get some scans up soon. Most of the stuff is from the 1984-1992 time period, so if you have been looking for anything in particular, let me know.

On Vacation with the Cat

Sally
Sally (points to icon) had to have surgery today and the vet sent us to the best Veterinary hospital in this region of the country - 200 miles away. So one sleepy person and one sleepy cat crawled out of bed at 4:00 am to make the trek here. So I'm currently stuck in a cheap hotel room in Knoxville with nothing to do but catch up on paperwork and browse the Internet. I've actually gotten more work done today than I would have if I had actually been in the office.

To stay in Knoxville was going to be a minimum of $129 a night, but to go 10 miles south it goes to $49! I chose to go cheap hotel it is just me and I just need a waiting place to crash, but it is actually clean, fresh, WARM, and nice. Sure there's no free breakfast, but all I really need is my Internet.

Does anyone know . . .

Sigh. Google has failed me. Does anyone know which states use a grand jury system? All I can find is "about half." But which ones?? . No, I'm not in trouble with the law, I'm creating a Criminal Justice class

So we have a new one

10 Doctors
This banner is a stupid idea that crept into my head after [info]box_in_the_box made a snarky post about speculations for the 12th Doctor based on the casting announcement for the 11th. I maybe should cut it for vague casting spoilers, but I think I've seen everyone on my Flist respond to the announcement.

I'm pretty neutral about the choice of a new Doctor. If I can't have David Morrissey then I just don't care. My only problem with the new guy so far is the hair. The. Hair. Must. Go!

After a week of frantically trying to clean house while meeting deadlines at work, it's finally over. *Big Sigh* The in-laws have left, the house is still clean! The in-laws are gone and I still have yummy leftovers. The in-laws are on their way home and the wine bottle is wooing me to finish it in peace. I can finally calmly sit in my CLEAN house and catch up on a week' worth of reading. Also, did I mention that the in-laws are GONE!

I'm terrified of tomorrow. We have a retail store. A retail TOY store. I'm terrified of a crowd, and I'm even more terrified that it will be slow because of the economy. Either way, I just want it to be over. We were going to go down there tonight a decorate it for Christmas, but both of us decided to stay home tonight and recouperate from, yes, you got it: the in-laws. We'll get up really early tomorrow and go decorate before opening.

From the journal of [info]parrotfish
If you are reading this, post a picture of a cat in your journal. (Your cat, a lolcat, or someone else's cat. But preferably yours, if possible.)

**Points to icon**
This is Sally. She's my 11 year old baby with delusions of supremacy - and an absolutely tramp!

While this makes me happy, I'm very sad that I live in one of those ugly red states. :(

Even though Obama is winning, I don't know if my nerves can take watching the election night returns this year. I'm trying to talk myself into no TV, no radio, no Internet. Just wake up the next morning and find out who won. Yeah, my hubby laughs when I say that too. Who am I kidding.

YouTube is certainly full of a lot of crap, but you have to love the way it levels the playing field in favor of the common person to get their message out. Check out this NY Times article:

Be sure to watch the mob video it links to. I hope that blond bitch is dying of embarrassment right now.

Typical . . .

Gold Guy
I work with a Republican man who honestly didn't get this joke. Which I think, actually, is the entire point:

A man wearing a Democratic pin walks into a bar and sees a picture of President Bush hanging behind the bartender. He calls the bartender over and says, "You should take that picture down. George Bush is a blight upon this nation. He should be impeached."

The bartender, a life-long Republican, is completely offended. "Why you liberal piece of garbage. How dare you come into my bar and tell me how to run my business!"

"Listen, I'm the customer, so I'm always right." the man says. "That picture offends me, so I want you to take it down."

"That tears it," the bartender says, "How would you like it if I came into your bar and told you what to do?"

"Well, you'd be the customer, so you'd be right," the man says.

"Fine, then let's switch places," the bartender says.

So, they do. The man takes the bartender's place behind the bar, and the bartender walks outside, waits a moment, and then comes back inside. The bartender sits at the bar and says to the bar, "You should take that pin off. The Democrats are destroying our country with their liberal agenda."

"Sorry," the man says, "but we don't serve Republicans here."

I has a toy store!

We finally did it. Hubby and I are now the proud proprietors of a local toy store. He's running it and ordering all the boy-stuff. I still have my day job and pop in on weekends and keep all the girl-stuff stocked. Unfortunately I can't order/sell the stuff I'd really like to have (Doctor Who action figures, Adipose babies squeeze toys, you get the idea) because most people in this country wouldn't have a clue what it is. I am, however threatening to paint the walls in the bathroom to match the TARDIS.

So last night I finished watching Journey’s End and was full of squee and ready to make a 100 icons. I logged onto LJ and felt like I had been doused with a bucket of ice water. I couldn’t believe all the negativity and fail. So although I never write my own reaction post, I figured I would this time since my opinion seems to be so different from everyone elses.

It's that time of year again. I live 25 miles from where Bonnaroo is and the traffic is already backing up to my exit. This is the weekend that the locals either stay home or go on vacation. I'm going to stay in and hide out in front of the air conditioner.

I finally broke down and got a paid account, only because I'm tired of deleting icons I like in order to use other one. Now I just need to peruse the extra layout options I have and figure out how to get the banner I have that I like up on my page. Anyone have a "how to" link to share?

But it Doesn't Match Any of my Clothes!

Why is it that I can use the same hair dye for YEARS and it does fine, but then suddenly it decides that it wants you to be ginger instead of dark brown. Sigh . . . Ah well.

I got my tickets today for the Shakespeare festival. This year it's going to be A Midsummer Night's Dream with Lane Davies. Hey, it's not David Tennant and Hamlet, but it's the best we can do on this side of the pond!

I just realized that if my father were still alive, today would be his 100th birthday. Wow! No, I'm not that old, he was just very late at getting settled down to the starting-a-family thing.

DVD vs. The iTunes Store

I still have never purchased either season 1 or 2 of Torchwood on DVD, but intend to. Now, I notice that the iTunes store has them for $25 a season, but that would be the episodes only. Can anyone tell me what all is included on the DVD? I can't decide if it is worth it to pay so much more for the "extras."
Jenny - Doctor
Doctor Who seems to bring out more passionate feelings in its fans more than many other fandoms and this past year seems to have been filled with an ever-increasing tension building towards an anticipated uncertain, nebulous climax. (Man! That sounds rather unsatisfying, doesn’t it?) Anyway, I rarely use my own journal to post my thoughts, preferring to reply on the journals of those whose opinion I care about and respect – even if their opinion differs from my own. But the last few episodes have been filled with personal reactions that seem to differ in such different ways from most of the communities I frequent. I figured “what the hell” I’ll get it down in my own journal so if anyone comes looking, at least my journal will reflect what I think. I realize this is very lengthy and past what even those on my flist will tolerate, and none of it is earth-shatteringly original. I just figured I'd get all my observations together in one place. It's divided into 8 sections: the Doctor, Rose, Sarah Jane, Martha, Astrid, Donna, Jenny, and author intent.

Discovering Buffy

  • Mar. 12th, 2008 at 8:28 PM
Book Cat
I'd never seen a single episode of Buffy or knew anything about the fandom (except that it apparently contains just as many "wars" as the Doctor Who fandom). But people who know me are always telling me that I would love Buffy. I just didn't want to go to all the trouble to track down all the episodes. Well, I work with a guy who discovered Torchwood just before Christmas, enjoyed it, but never realized it was a spinoff of another program. I gave him the 20 minute history-of-Doctor-Who lecture and handed him New Who seasons 1-3. He got hooked and I'm currently compiling a list from my Old Who collection for him. In return he handed me a case of CDs that contain 14 seasons of Buffy/Angel/Firefly.

I got started on Friday and I'm currently halfway through season 2 of Buffy. I'm enjoying watching all this without knowing all the fan-wank that went (since DW/TW gives me enough of that right now. But I also miss having anyone (aside from my friend at work) to share the observations and questions with about the show - especially since I'm watching the earliest episodes right now and they are over 10 years old. And of course I keep comparing things to other fandoms I have belonged to. Just because I can't stand not voicing my opinion, here are my observations of what I've seen so far:
- Buffy is worse than Clark Kent at making up excuses
- The whole dark/tortured thing that gets on my nerves in DW and makes me want to slap Ten around works much better with Angel
- Willow is getting on my nerves in a Tosh sort of way, but I'll excuse it in a 15-year old
- Giles . . . That's just. . . wrong. He's supposed to be the bad guy that turns into a bat. (And he looks a LOT younger than just 9 years from S1 Buffy to S2 DW
- Isn't this set in the mid 1990's? I could have sworn desegregation took place in the 1960's. Why is this an all white school?
- Does James Marsters always play the exact same character in the stuff he does?
